After spending time with family, friends, or enjoying peaceful solitude over the holidays, it's an inspiring time to reflect on relationships.
Sacred relationships.
Also, because I’m leading a retreat in late January, I’m spending the next few weeks writing and reflecting on the value each person plays in a relationship.
Today, I want to focus on sacred relationships and partnerships. To me, that means unity for longevity.
We know that at the beginning of a relationship, it's so easy. Everything feels beautiful thanks to the biochemistry of love, all those delicious feel-good chemicals flooding the brain: Dopamine and oxytocin, in particular.
But what happens as time goes by? What happens after the two-year, twelve-year, and twenty-year mark?
How do we not only maintain, but deepen that connection, that communion and intimacy?
The authentic communication, the mindful presence with each other – how do we deepen that? How do we navigate the pitfalls of complacency, resentment, and superficiality?
When we maintain and deepen the connection, communion, and intimacy, we can see that what we're able to cultivate together is far greater, and is created more quickly than what we're capable of doing on our own. We complete the grand design and circuit of divine union.
When two people come together from a place of tantric alignment – and when I say tantric I’m not referring to solely sexual – a higher potential exists when we connect from the physical plane (physical attraction and chemistry) with emotional vulnerability, similar mental wavelengths, and a soul-level communion.
Our sacred relationship becomes the embodiment of divine sacred union.
It becomes that alchemical fire of being in a relationship with another where we get activated as an accelerated means of transformation and transfiguration. We have the potential to co-create life far beyond limitations. There’s a greater potential activated.
Consider the nature of your sacred relationships. At what point do you consider the relationship with yourself?
Think about this. All of our outward relationships, particularly our loving relationships, are based on our relationship with ourselves. These are highly influenced by past experiences that formed patterns that perpetuate in our current lives.
How do you change those old patterns that are playing out today? By coming into a greater awareness and understanding the roots of those patterns.
What I call the Early Childhood Treasure Map is all of those experiences that were imprinted within us and our cells from our environment during our core developmental years.
Many of the answers you seek can be found by looking at the interactions between your parents or primary caregivers and how they modeled relationships. How they showed love to you and each other. How did they communicate with each other? How did they create a life together? What were the varying degrees of harmony, intimacy, and faith in their relationship?
All of these different representations of life become what we model ourselves by on a deeply subconscious level.
How do we become the change we wish to see in our relationships?
How do we open to deeper intimacy and trust when we've been hurt in the past?
To truly open yourself to a relationship and all of its sacredness that you desire, even crave, the connection where you’re seen, heard, and understood for who you are authentically, you must move your subconscious patterns to the conscious.
Instead of subconsciously projecting your dreams, desires, and the places of pain and distortion from your past, becoming conscious allows for depth in your relationships.
By looking at relationships where you've been together for a while and the passion has settled, you can begin to see how those patterns show up in your communication.
For example, when did you start feeling resentful? Was it because you weren’t speaking your truth? Did you stop speaking your truth because you didn't feel heard or understood?
When and where did you first feel that as a child? How has that pattern shown up in your life and other relationships to date?
How does your past understanding of love and relationships affect your present actions?
When you take an honest look at yourself instead of just your partner, you can begin to be the change you wish to experience in your relationship.
Magical transformations occur when your partner is doing the same reflection and working on THEIR OWN patterns.
In the upcoming retreat I'm hosting with Shawn Christian, we'll be transforming the patterns that each of us bring to our relationships, and begin cultivating new ways to create healthier, more sustainable patterns for a more harmonious and nurturing future.
Are you ready to let a new way of living and loving into your relationship and life?
