What are the physical benefits of sound therapy?
Since ancient times, we have been drawn to sound. Harmonious frequencies that come through music, tones, and various forms of sound therapy have a direct and immediate effect on our psyche and the harmony of our body, mind, and spirit.
Quantum physics proves that everything in the universe is energy. All energy is in a state of constant vibration, oscillating at certain frequencies at the subatomic level. Everything we experience in nature, every sound, smell, particle is energy flux in some degree of vibration.
Harmonious sounds allow us to tap into harmony around and within us. They emit energy, frequency, and vibration, and by incorporating them into the spa experience, you can receive the benefit of their harmony and wellbeing. Chimes, bells, bowls, tuning forks, and other instrumentation support deep relaxation, better sleep, and other tension-related imbalances. Crystal and Tibetan bowls are beautiful ways to bring the resonance of sound to your environment. Research of sound meditation with Tibetan bowls has shown significant decreases in tension, fatigue, and depressive mood with an increase in feelings of spiritual wellbeing (Goldsby et al. NIH).
Interestingly, the Schuman resonance of 8 Hz, determined to be the frequency of the heartbeat of the Mother Earth by German physicist Winfried Schumann, was furthered to connect brainwave states and subconscious receptivity with the Solfeggio frequencies, specific tones that harmonize mind-body wellness. These tones, dating back to ancient Indian Sanskrit and other spiritual traditions, have been mathematically researched to holistically restore health and balance.
The most notable and well-known of these frequencies is 432 Hz, which has been researched to show a decreased heartbeat in studies. Spiritually, it is associated with increasing psychic awareness and overall feelings of emotional balance. We can trace this frequency all the way back to the mystic mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, who created one of the earliest forms of musical tuning to this frequency (Calamassi D. et al. Explore NY).
What are the emotional/spiritual benefits of sound therapy?
Well-known research offers versatile benefits of classical music - including the Mozart and Beethoven Effects. Lesser-known research in the field of sound and vibrational response by the late Dr. Masaru Emoto, who devoted over twenty years of his life to the research of water, indicates a profound response to words, intention, and various genres of music on water molecules. Classical pieces from Beethoven, Mozart, and Vivaldi produced incredibly beautiful crystalline structures within water. Conversely, heavy metal music with bass and unsavory lyrics produced distorted structures.
These crystalline structures of water can demonstrate beauty and harmony through positive intention and alternatively can form in distortion through discord and negative emotion. Emoto believed that words were the expression of the soul and that all life could be brought back to wholeness with the energy of “love and gratitude,” as these words produced the most perfect and elegant of crystalline structures. Our own human bodies are composed of over fifty percent water. We respond to the intention and vibration of everything in our environment, particularly through sound.
Einstein believed the music of Mozart “was so pure that it seemed to have been ever-present in the universe…” We now know the many cognitive benefits of this genre of music - including boosting brain function. Tibetan and crystal bowl sound baths can create delightful harmonies to deepen your relaxation into deeper brainwave states. You can further potentize this experience by engaging multiple senses and inhaling a pure essential oil during your listening experience to engage the limbic system, which regulates mood, memory, and emotion in holistically anchoring your experience in the brain and body.
A little over twenty years ago, I was included in a PBS program on the use of alternative medicine in Hospice for my work with essential oils and energy medicine with patients. There was another individual who used music with patients. It provided such a sense of solace and support. Music elicits harmony, awakens, inspires, soothes, and activates our spirit and emotions.
Music and aromatherapy have been shown to stimulate the release of dopamine, a key neurotransmitter in encouraging neural growth. This is significant because it shows that both listening to music and immersing oneself in aromatics “stimulate the same neural network as that involved in reinforcement learning and reward” (Lv Xn, et al, Constantin).
How can spas or healing centers add sound therapy into their programming?
Create and curate a series of sound bath journeys for your clients. This can be a specific individual or group service that offers a practitioner to play Tibetan or crystal bowls in the healing room or salt cave, or the use of tuning forks directly into the energy field of the client. Incorporate pure essential oils via inhalation and the intention of your client for at least twenty minutes.
A simplified version could be applied as such:
Choose an uplifting piece of classical music or a Solfeggio tone for your treatment room. Encourage your client to visualize their body, mind, and spirit in a harmonious concert with the selected sounds, inviting benevolent spiritual energy to surround them with a sense of inspiration, encouragement, and grace.
What are your favorite "tools" for sound therapy (singing bowls, tuning forks, etc.)?
As a facilitator, my favorite “tool” in either private or group sessions is the use of toning. Very early in my career as a healer, I would find myself guided to tone specific harmonics into the energy centers, known as the chakras. The responses from my clients and students have been profound.
This process of toning has accelerated the process of clearing energy blockages and establishing greater harmony in the physical, emotional, and spiritual body. Toning the specific frequency needed allows a rapid shift in the energy and emotions of an individual - similar to taking a high speed elevator versus numerous stairs to the top floor. This is a program that I offer to practitioners of the healing arts that can be incorporated into many different sessions.
Why is that "tool" your favorite?
My favorite tool depends on the moment of the day. Am I looking to be inspired or calmed? Am I working out or writing? Do I want to deepen my meditation or am I teaching a program? I am surrounded by music throughout my day. It increases my focus, productivity, and pleasure - whether I am in my office, home space and family time, or even in the car.
I can be found listening to and chanting mantras for positivity like Nam Myoho Renge Kyo to tap into flow state and miracle consciousness, Solfeggio tones for writing and healing-focused sessions, and classical composers like Bach for home and family time. I am also a big fan of Cole Porter and 1040’s Big Band. AND I love 80’s and 90’s music for my workouts. I love to mix it up based on my mood, the moment, and my desired outcome.
