True neroli or orange blossom oil is precious, rare, and highly expensive. This often-adulterated oil in its full and completely natural state is in one word, exquisite.
Although I had encountered this expression of the orange tree early in my studies of aromatherapy, it wasn’t until a journey to Egypt that I fell in love.
In early 2000, my trip to Egypt was entrenched in mysticism. As it was my second journey, I was more accustomed to the culture and the ways of the people and felt much safer. The unique opportunity was to travel to many sacred sites prior to the general opening for ceremony, meditation, and toning. One of my favorites was the temple at Dendera, which is the temple dedicated to Goddess Hathor.
While we were there, I had images of the temple in the earlier days, restored to its perfection, its beauty, and elaborate center for healing. Many of the rooms had healing tables that were created of stone and cutouts in the ceiling to allow for certain configurations of stars and healing energy that they would bring to the individual on the table.
I stayed at the Mena house at the foot of the Great Pyramid at Giza. The view from my balcony at nightfall was enchanting in the rarest of ways, looking out at one of the most puzzling wonders of the world, fully illuminated with the desert as a backdrop and the sweet aroma of orange blossoms falling the night air. The property had numerous orange trees and it just so happened they were in full bloom. I sat during the hot days as the petals fell and made a carpet to luxuriate on beneath me.
This utterly clear memory demonstrates the power of the olfactory limbic connection.
The essential oil becomes the anchor, or rather the key to access the memory, forever etched and accessible in your consciousness, and with it, the emotional connections and experience that live and breathe there. When I inhale neroli, I envision the sweetest melody intertwining with the aromatic molecules. It’s this nourishing sweetness, like honey, that gently drips its vibration into the heart and all the cellular structures of the body.
Its bright aroma lifts the spirit and speaks to the remembrance of joy and lightheartedness. Neroli is highly beneficial for those who tend to be harsh and critical of themselves and can assist in shifting this energy to that of self-love and compassion. This oil assists in dissolving extreme emotions like jealousy, anger, and self-hatred. It aids in settling shock and counterbalancing PTSD.
One day of this trip, on the spring equinox and full moon, we were offered passage to the Great Pyramid. The government had closed it to all other tourists that day, and we were graced with the experience of meditation in the Queen’s Chamber by candlelight. A group then encircled the great sarcophagus and the King’s Chamber for a ceremony indoctrinating the ancient ways of the rites of the Rose Cross.
Old memories were activated deep within me and my heart opened, as did my spiritual centers or light wheels. A place deep within my soul had been activated, or rather reconnected, if you will. I felt as though my entire auric field had opened and was breathing and connecting with the world - seen and unseen. This innate potential exists within you, too.
In a new way, tears of expansion flowed as I walked out of the pyramid. I paused after exiting the narrow corridor and began a conversation with a tour guide. As she looked intently into my eyes, she said, “Ah, so that is where I know you from, long ago here in Egypt, when we used the pyramid as a rite of initiation and specific alchemy.” We knew each other. She went on to tell me that she felt guided to give me a message: Go into the dark void and trust. You didn’t do that fully last time. And you regretted it. There was a resonance of truth in her communication and our connection. And I sat with the idea of what that meant for me in my current life.
After returning home, I spent a great deal of time in nature, walking in the woods, meditating and praying. And a few months later, I felt ready to leave my corporate job and pursue a full-time healing practice and aromatherapy product business.
This place of surrender and trust would not have been possible without that time of expansion in Egypt. When the heart opens, and ways of expansion for a spiritual opening as well, an alignment can occur, offering the deep mystical wisdom to bring us to the pinnacle of transformation. It’s like coming to the edge of a cliff. In that moment, our free will decides whether we make that leap into the unknown. The choice is always ours.
