Does speaking the same language really mean we understand each other? We tend to believe that just because we speak the same language like English, Italian, French, or Spanish that we are on the same page.
Yet, it is our emotional language that we communicate in our love relationships. When that differs, the stars stop aligning and conflict arises.
Love is the strongest force in the universe. Books, movies, and music are written about it from every different perspective. We will move mountains, cast aside sleeping and eating when we are “in love.” AND it can also create some of the most confusing and painful experiences of our lives with the longest-lasting effects.
In this day of higher and higher divorce rates, how do we live through the dopamine rush of being “in love” and cultivate a healthy, passionate, emotionally fulfilling relationship that can stand the test of time?
Understanding your love language can help you to communicate your emotional needs more clearly and reframe your expectations of your love relationships.
We all have a basic human need for emotional fulfillment. We all want to share love and feel loved, heard, seen, and supported for who we are, authentically.
Understanding your love language empowers you to create greater harmony, clarity, and long-lasting love in your relationships.
Which of the primary love languages do you find most fulfilling?
Words of Appreciation that are inspirational, encouraging, or affirming like I love you, I am here for you, You look beautiful can instill an immediate sense of gratitude.
Spending Quality Time together that is filled with complete presence (versus a face in a digital device). When you focus your time and energy on your loved one, it can feel like being warmed by the sun. Time together with no distractions can make five minutes feel like an hour of great one-on-one time.
Receiving Gifts A present does not have to cost a fortune to have meaning - simple gifts or handmade items often mean more than that expensive piece of jewelry or watch. My partner would often bring me back stones from his deployments. I treasure those small tokens of his love and thoughtfulness as if they are diamonds.
Physical Touch From simple gestures of contact when you pass in the kitchen, freely given back rubs on a Sunday morning to sacred time alone together in the boudoir, the tactile experiences bring warmth and the desire for deeper connection.
Acts of Service by your love like picking up one of your household chores when you have a tight schedule. Making surprise plans for dinner, a concert, or a weekend away can delight an overscheduled season.
Of course, all five of these languages show positive actions, Yet, if you are a lover of gifts from the little to the large and your partner is constantly offering words of appreciation, there is a mismatch that in time can bring a lackluster feeling to your relationship.
Whether you are in a sacred relationship that you want to deepen or are ready to manifest the love of your life, you can benefit from a clear understanding of the five love languages and how to effectively and consciously communicate them to your loved one. Be patient with yourself and your loved one while you navigate this new territory. Rome was not built in a day and neither will your new communication style be perfected in one, either.
If you have not read The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman, it can revolutionize the way you communicate your emotional needs and the expectations of your partner to create the love you truly desire.
