Q: How and why can crystals support a good night's sleep?
The ancient healing properties of crystals are a relatively untapped phenomena of the natural world. The Earth is composed of thousands of minerals with specific and potent abilities to heal, balance and fortify our existence. Their vibrational patterning receives, transmits and amplifies energy and can be found in countless areas of modern and innovative technology from cars to clocks to communications equipment.
Commonly known crystals like amethyst, lapis lazuli and turquoise have been worn, traded and incorporated into rituals, ceremonies to remind us of our deep connection to the Earth and her rich offering of medicines to restore our intrinsic human design for vibrancy and wholeness. Rest, rejuvenation and quietude are critical components of optimal well being.
Q: What crystals do you recommend and what are their benefits?
These are some of my favorite crystals for sleep for my family and clients.
Peaceful sleep: Fluorite, Green Calcite, Rose Quartz. Fluorite and Green calcite offer a calming and soothing energy and invite us to an ease of emotion after a long day. Rose quartz is a stone of love, encouraging us to let go of any disharmonious energies or interactions of the day.
Anxiety and sleep: Rhodochrosite, Red Tiger’s Eye, Amethyst. These 3 stones are helpful for easing anxiety and calming the nervous system to relax body and mind. Rhodochrosite is helpful for those of us who experience anxiousness in the chest while Red Tiger’s Eye is helpful for those whose anxiety is of a full body nature. Amethyst is calming for those who experience anxiety as tension headaches or digestive difficulties.
Insomnia: Moonstone, Opal, Ruby. Moonstone and Opal are excellent for insomnia related to overthinking and what I call the unending “to do” list, whether it was yesterdays, todays or tomorrows. These stones offer a sense of deep tranquility and remind us of the mysteries of the universe. Ruby is wonderful when insomnia is hormone related and need not be gem quality to be effective.
Dreams and to help with nightmares: Epidote, Black Tourmaline, Citrine. Epidote is a stone of great understanding, it is wonderful to enhance dreaming and to tap into your wise, intuitive nature. Black tourmaline is a stone of protection and helpful against nightmares. Citrine is a stone of empowerment and is helpful to overcome the challenges that often appear in reoccurring dreams
Sleep and relaxation: Sapphire, Sugilite, Celestite. Sapphire activates mystical vision and awakening of the mysteries of the universe and brings an energy of deep peace. Sugilite fosters a sense of meditative zen and quietude at the cellular level. Celestite is also known as the stone of the angels and infuses us with grace and a desire for calm and tranquility.
Sleep apnea: Quartz, Jasper, Lapis Lazuli. Quartz helps to keep energy channels of flow open throughout the body. Jasper infuses our blood with the energy of renewal and vitality, strengthening us at the cellular level. Lapis connects us to the cosmic principle of harmony and balance, allowing our spirit to engage with esoteric pursuits so our physical body can rest and renew.
Snoring: Blue Kyanite, Blue calcite, Selenite. These stones help to clear, balance and expand the throat and sinus areas to allow better energy flow. Blue kyanite and blue calcite also create a peaceful environment for us to let go off the core frustrations of life that permeate our dream time. Selenite helps to clear the energy, lifting those heavy emotional ties to relationships, money and our work that create additional subconscious turmoil.
Sleepwalking: Garnet, Malachite, Shungite. These 3 stones help to create a protective shield of energy around the individual to elicit a sense of safety on the subconscious level.
Q: Can you give a brief explainer on how the following methods of use can support a good night's sleep?
Crystals in the room: Crystal grids can be set up in various parts of your bedroom and synergized with your intention. The right essential oils will also amplify their effects.
You can have a bedroom grid for meditation set up around a comfortable chair or meditation pillow with 4 pieces of lapis lazuli set around you to invoke the cosmic principles of harmony and balance.
You can set up a grid under a crib in your baby's room (make sure to remove it when the baby starts crawling) Place a piece of selenite at each of the four corners and a rose quartz in the center to create a loving, peaceful, and protective space.
Instead of placing your crystals under your pillow, place your chosen pieces under your mattress. At minimum, make sure to place in each of the four corners of your mattress for balance.
Place a large single terminated quartz crystal on your nightstand to bring clarity in your dream time.
Under your pillow: I have a relatively large piece of fluorite I like to place under my pillow. It is gently calming and helps me connect to a deep sense of the dream state. When I sleep with this stone, I often wake with clear guidance of my primary objectives for the day.
On your body: Here is a simple 3 Crystal and 7 Crystal Grid for sleep.
Crystal Grids:
3 Crystal Grid: You’ll need 2 amethyst and 1 moonstone. Place one amethyst on each side of your head (laying on your back) and one moonstone above the crown of your head while focusing on the deepening of your breath.
7 Crystal Grid: Place one Celestite on each side of your head (laying on your back) and one above the crown of your head. Place one opal on your forehead in the third eye area. Then place 3 pieces of amber along your body at the heart, solar plexus and then sacral area (lower belly). Focus on deepening your breath.
I recommend a simple practice of gratitude while your crystals are placed upon your body working their magic. This allows your heart to open and frees the monkey mind by focusing on aspects of your life with thankfulness.

Crystal Relaxation Bath: (note some crystals like selenite do not react well with water-check the Moho hardness scale first). Enjoy a warm crystal bath for 20 minutes before retiring for the evening. I like to add rose quartz, a few drops of my favorite essential oils and envision myself surrounded in a pink cocoon of unconditional love to envelop and entice me to the dream world. Add a cup of calming herbal tea to enhance your relaxation experience.
Q: Are there any precautions people should take or safety issues to bear in mind when using crystals for sleep?
Yes. Terminated crystals (pointed) can poke or pierce the body when kept in the bed. Also small crystals should be avoided when children have access to the family bed. Fragile crystals can also break when kept in the bed.
Q: What crystals shouldn’t be in your bedroom? And Why?
Crystals that can be over stimulating should not be kept in the bedroom. For example, Moldavite can be highly stimulating to some individuals and is best kept away from the bedroom for some. Turquoise is another highly energizing stone and is best to be worn throughout the day vs at night. Everyone has a different response energetically to specific crystals. If you share your bed with another, it is best to explore their receptivity before adding to the bedroom.
Remember to cleanse your crystals monthly to keep the energy clear and at the highest vibrational potency possible.
